About This Quote

This short story, written by Joyce Carol Oates, tells the story of Soroya and Graham. Soroya is in love with Graham, but he does not return her feelings. One day, while out shopping, Soroya overhears Graham saying that they are going to a strip club. This event causes Soroya to become angry with Graham and she demands to know where they are going.

In response, Graham says that she is wearing whatever she is wearing right now. The way that Graham says this makes it seem as if he likes Soroya’s choice of clothing and is encouraging her to wear something more attractive. However, his comments also make it seem as if he would not be bothered by what she was wearing before—she was only going out shopping anyway.
